Yeah, Right: China Insists “No Cover-Up” on Coronavirus Count

(FamilyRetirementClub.Com)- The Chinese Communist Party is stepping up efforts to convince the international community that they did not attempt to hide the real number of COVID-19 infections and deaths. According to Zhao Lijian, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, there was no attempted cover-up of the initial outbreak and that the inaccurate numbers are simply the result of bad accounting.

On Friday, Zhao said that the Community Party of China doesn’t allow cover-ups.

China has been accused of not just covering up the number of infections and deaths, but the outbreak itself. One study even suggested that, had China taken action three weeks earlier, the spread of the virus globally could have been reduced by 95%.

Zhao also played down suggestions that the country worked too closely with the World Health Organization. The foreign ministry spokesman said those who claimed the World Health Organization and China worked together to downplay the severity of the disease were just “smearing” Beijing.

“I think they are all smearing China and cooking up stories about China,” he said.

The same day, Zhao announced that the number of deaths and infections in Wuhan city had increased, and that the numbers were wrong because of accounting errors. On Thursday, the numbers were adjusted to accommodate an increase of 50%. Deaths, according to the new data, hit 3,869, with a total number of confirmed infections reaching 50,333.

On April 14, President Donald Trump announced that he would halt all funding to the World Health Organization while a review into their role in covering up the initial outbreak takes place.

The move was criticized and branded “illegal” by Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, but you probably expected her to say that.

Not only will an investigation into the World Health Organization’s conduct take place, but U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also said to Fox News on Thursday that the federal government will be investigating the origins of the virus. It is believed by Pompeo, and his counterparts across the world, that there is a possibility the virus was accidentally released from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
