(FamilyRetirementClub.Com)- For weeks now, the White House coronavirus task force has been holding daily press briefings.
But following harsh criticism of President Donald Trump’s responses to questions — and an apparent suggestion that injecting disinfectant chemicals into one’s body might kill the virus — the White House has decided to suspend them, for now.
The White House said they wouldn’t be holding the daily briefings anymore, as they take the time to focus on the economic re-opening of the country. The briefings will supposedly resume later in the week, though.
As the fight against the coronavirus pandemic is shifting slightly from the first phase of lockdown and control to re-open and mitigate, it’s possible the briefings will take on a slightly different tone when they resume. As Kayleigh McEnany, the White House press secretary said:
“We are not tracking a briefing for today … there will be some briefings later in the week. They might have a new look to them, a new focus to them.
“I would not read into that anything that said we see them as negative because, in fact, we think that have been a very positive, helpful opportunity for the president to speak to the American people.”
Critics of the president have said he has used a lot of these press briefings as a platform for his re-election campaign. One in particular drew the ire of many liberal media outlets, where the White House coronavirus task force played a pre-recorded video that lauded the accomplishments of the Trump administration in regard to the fight against the coronavirus.
Trump has criticized the media for their coverage of the briefings, the coronavirus pandemic — and, truthfully, his entire presidency. On Monday, he continued his attacks, tweeting:
“There has never been, in the history of our Country, a more vicious or hostile Lamestream Media than there is right now, even in the midst of a National Emergency, the Invisible Enemy!”
But these briefings were also a great way for experts in the field of medicine, economics and infectious disease to reach the American people directly and apprise them of what is going on. For now, it seems that will no longer be available, at least for the time being.
While Monday’s press briefing was cancelled, Trump is still scheduled to talk to reporters. He has a 4 p.m. Eastern Time meeting with industry executives, and is likely to take questions then.
The White House coronavirus task force daily briefings have been very popular among Americans. There have been 49 of them since February 26, according to McEnany. The high ratings that they consistently bring in show Americans “love to watch their president lead this country,” she said.
Some of the press briefings have lasted more than two hours, with Trump and other members of the task force taking questions. Two people who have emerged as the medical faces of the pandemic have been present at these meetings. They are Dr. Deborah Birx, the coronavirus response coordinator, and Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
