(FamilyRetirementClub.com)- No matter how much the Democrats and the media try and paint President Donald Trump as a “puppet” of Russia, it’ll never be true. That was more evident on Thursday than ever before when the president announced that the United States would withdraw from the Open Skies Treaty, citing Russia’s failure to comply with its end of the deal.
The treaty came into effect back in 2002 and allowed Russia and the United States to fly surveillance aircraft over other each other’s airspace. The idea was to encourage greater transparency between the two nations, but over time it has become clear to the United States federal government that Russia wasn’t complying with the deal and has repeatedly refused to allow American flights over some of its territory.
Specifically, government officials said that Russia has refused some American flights over territory the country claims to be Russian. The territory in question includes Russian-occupied parts of Georgia, including South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
As a result, President Trump told the media on Thursday that the United States would stop complying with the treaty until Russia holds up its end of the deal.
“Russia and us have developed a very good relationship,” he said. “As you know, we worked on the oil problem together. I think we have a very good relationship with Russia. But Russia didn’t adhere to the treaty, so until they adhere, we will pull out.”
Trump did, nevertheless, express his optimism that the United States and Russia could work the problem out.
“There’s a very good chance we’ll make a new agreement or do something to put that agreement back together,” he said. “When you have an agreement, and the other side doesn’t adhere to the agreement, we’re not going to adhere to it either. But I think something very positive will work out.”
The withdrawal from the treaty will come into effect six months from Friday, but Secretary of State Mike Pompeo did tell the Russians that the United States would reconsider the withdrawal if they simple returned to full compliance.
Democrats naturally didn’t agree with the decision, simply because Trump made it. The former CIA Director under President Obama Michael Hayden told his Twitter followers, “This is insane. I was the director of CIA.”
This is insane. I was the director of CIA.
