(FamilyRetirementClub.com)- Presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said this week that if he were elected president, he will restore the Obamacare mandate that religious entities must subsidize birth control.
Following a Supreme Court ruling on the matter this week, Biden said:
“As disappointing as the Supreme Court’s ruling is, there is a clear path to fixing it: electing a new President who will end Donald Trump’s ceaseless attempts to gut every aspect of the Affordable Care Act. If I am elected, I will restore the Obama-Biden policy that existed before the Hobby Lobby ruling: providing an exemption for houses of worship and accommodation for nonprofit organizations with religious missions.
“As a result of today’s decision, countless women are at risk of losing access to affordable, preventive care.”
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court ruled in a 7-2 decision that Little Sisters of the Poor could be exempt from being forced to include contraception in its health plans offered to employees because of its religious beliefs.
Opinions from Justices Neil Gorsuch and Samuel Alito both said the Religious Freedom Restoration Act required the exemption in question. And Justice Elena Kagan wrote she believed supporters of the amendment could eventually sue again to get it re-instated on other legal grounds.
In response to the Supreme Court ruling, Ali Pardo, the deputy communications director for President Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign, said:
“Joe Biden’s decade-long war against Catholic nuns and the Little Sisters of the Poor is finally over. Today’s Supreme Court ruling is a landmark win for religious liberty. Unlike Joe Biden, President Trump has been a staunch defender of religious freedom since taking office and will always fight to defend communities of faith.”
Biden is running on a pro-abortion platform that includes now re-instating this mandate, allowing with “codifying” the Roe v. Wade landmark Supreme Court decision into law. He also would like to repeal the Hyde Amendment, which currently bars public funding to support most abortions. Biden’s platform would also direct the Justice Department to “do everything in its power” to stop pro-life laws at the state level, such as waiting periods, ultrasound laws and parental notification requirements.
Biden has also declared abortion an “essential healthcare” that should continue throughout the coronavirus pandemic.
Brian Burch, the president of Catholic Vote, responded to Biden’s statement by saying:
“Joe Biden has removed any remaining doubt about how his administration would mistreat and marginalize Catholics if elected. From his support for taxpayer-funded pro-abortion extremism, to his pledge to continue to harass the Little Sisters of the Poor, Biden will be a wrecking ball against all things that Catholics hold dear. All Catholics in America must speak out forcefully against these threats, lest the Catholic Church in America be trampled.”
Some of the other pro-abortion measures Biden supports are reversing a policy that bars federal funds from supporting abortions that are performed overseas, known as the Mexico City Policy. Biden is fully supportive of the pro-abortion wing, and everything he says continues to emphasize that.
