(FamilyRetirementClub.Com)- Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed rumors that the United States will be performing a “full investigation” into how the Chinese coronavirus “got out into the world” during a Fox News segment with Martha MacCallum on Wednesday.
The news comes as a shock after weeks of left-wing media outlets shutting down discussion about the possibility of the virus coming from a laboratory in Wuhan. Market blog ZeroHedge was even recently banned from Twitter for suggesting the virus may have originated in a laboratory.
“The mere fact that we don’t know the answers, that China hasn’t shared the answers, I think is very, very telling,” Pompeo told MacCallum, in reference to questions about the origins of the virus. “To your point, the president said that there are multiple sources. What we do know is, we know that this virus originated in Wuhan, China. We know that there is the Wuhan Institute of Virology just a handful of miles away from where the wet market was.”
Pompeo explained how he has discussed the topic with his counterparts all over the world in the last few days, and it’s not just the United States who thinks there may be a link to the virus originating in Wuhan and the presence of the virology institute in the same city.
“It’s very difficult to make the case that there was anything but absence of shared information in a timely fashion,” he added. “It didn’t just put Americans at risk, it put people all across the world at risk.”
Pompeo explained the nature of the laboratory in Wuhan, too, revealing that it contains “highly contagious materials.”
The United States government, according to Pompeo, already knew about the presence of dangerous viruses and contagious materials, and that the institute was working on a program that could be relevant to the spread of COVID-19.
“We’re doing a full investigation of everything we can to learn how it is the case that this virus got away, got out into the world, and now has created so much – so much tragedy, so much death here in the United States and all around the world, and at enormous cost to the global economy as well.”
Currently, global experts’ best guess is that the virus originated in a wet market in China. In 2003, a virus that originated in a Chinese wet market, SARS, swept across the globe. Viruses and bacteria spread easily in these markets owing to the dirty conditions and the fact that live, wild animals are stacked on top of one another in cages.
Should the virus be discovered to have come from a laboratory, the narrative surrounding China could drastically change. Republicans are already standing up to the communist country, but Democrats continue defending the nation under the guise of anti-racism.
